June 24, 2020
Program
In the morning we leave Skopje and drive towards National Park Mavrovo. Today we will experience unforgettable nature and old mountain villages. Entering the National Park, we will make the first photo stop by the Lake Mavrovo. Driving through the canyon of the river Radika, we take the next stop at St. John the Baptist of Bigorski Monastery, which is widely renowned as the most spiritual monastery in Macedonia. This 19th-century structure, erected upon both the ruins of an 11th-century church and the slopes of Mountain Bistra, is home to a small silver coffin allegedly containing the remains of St John himself. Next, we must see the nearby waterfalls of Duf, to listen to the sounds of nature, and relax. We continue on to the village of Lazaropole, an old typical Macedonian mountain village on an altitude of 1,350 meters. We make a short coffee break before we start walking around the village, admiring nature, and the unique architecture. We will visit the close village of Gari, almost at the same altitude. The houses are made of natural materials that can be found in the surrounding, to hold warm in winter, and refreshing in summer. We will walk to the waterfalls of Gari River, take a walk in nature, and finish the day back in Skopje.
